Last year, Braiden Maither was diagnosed with Arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis), a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton, which affects joints in the spine and the sacroiliac joint in the pelvis that, in the worse cases, can result in the complete fusion and rigidity of the spine. Simply walking can be extremely difficult and painful, let alone trying to surf. But Braiden was determined not to let the disease control his life so, after battling with rehab and doctors, he started surfing “to get his life back together”. Only one year, and he’s already getting barreled off his head in Indonesia.
