Philip Plastina invited me to Dancertonaut headquarters to see the mother ship and where the Dancetronauts blast off from. We relaxed at his house and discussed the Dancetronauts and current moves in the electric dance music industry. Then on Saturday night he invited me up to The City to party with them VIP and dance all night at Temple. His thoughts and advice on what is going on in the music world, were encouraging.
SCW: Please tell us your name and position in the Dancetronauts.
Philip: Dancetronauts Philip Plastina, Founder and President.
SCW: Could you please give us a little bit of background information on the Dancetronauts?
Philip: The Dancetronauts started when I went on a Burning Man exposition with my cousin in 2005. That year our idea was to build a couple of spaceships, art cars, and dress up in white space suits. The jumpsuit space suits were just a way to keep clean at Burning Man and then it manifested into the Dancetronauts. It was a great hit so in 2009 I built an even bigger spaceship named Synapses Fire. Joined up with Travis Richards and Money Michael in LA. It is great to be in the middle of the action when the dancefloor explodes and everybody is ready to party.
Philip: When we first started out our major influence were DJ Dan, Crystal Method, Daft Punk, and some of the earlier names in electronica. Our recent influences are Felguk, and TecFreaks. These guys help us create a party atmosphere and we infuse it with our Art Car. The speakers in our Art Car are unique; there is nothing else in the world that sounds quite like it. Our speakers are specifically for electronic music. Now we are also working on creating our own music, Electro House style with a burning man flare. Our sound comes from all of the music styles that influence us.
SCW: Do you believe the EDC movement will continue on making incredible strides in the music industry?
Philip: Yes, I believe electronic music is still at a rise. I’ve traveled a lot, if you go to any other place in the world and that is their choice music. In Europe and Japan the radios are playing electronic music. It is influencing the world music scene and it is only a mater of time before it takes over. We are on the cusp of a world wide takeover of electric dance music.
SCW: What’s the greatest advice that’s ever been given to you?
Philip: To be different. If ten people decide to do something and nine people all do the same thing, one person has to do something different because nothing happens 100% of the time. There should always be alternative ways of thinking. That advice has gotten me to where I am today. Come up with your own stuff, as easy and as scary as it sounds, and test it in a real time environment.
SCW: What is the best advise you would give to someone else in a similar situation as you in the entertainment industry?
Phillip: If you are honestly going to move in the industry you have to let you passion drive you. You’ll get struck down fast if all you are doing is in it for the money and fame. The best way to do it is to do it with support form underneath. Do something genuine and things will come your way.
SCW: Could you please describe to us what the ultimate party would look like?
Phillip: Yeah, Freedom Fest. I want to make Freedom Fest a festival where people of all likes and minds can come together and create a multifaceted event. Generated by the people, this fest will be for all people who are interested in different types of music. If you are into rock there will be a place for that, if you like electric music there will be a place for that. It will be held on a large area of land where people can go to different sections and enjoy multiple musical experiences with many different stages. You could walk around a village of stages and camps with huge sound systems with a centralized hub. This is a festival I would like to create where you are free to do anything. Basically it will be enjoying anything that you are enjoying in your life.
SCW: Do you have any events coming up?
Phillip: We do. Burning man will be going off, we are doing the all White Party with Opulent Temple. That will be Wednesday night at the Control Tower during Burning Man. Don’t forget to wear white. We feel blessed to take on a party of that size. September 7th we are doing Thrive Festival here in San Lorenzo Park. All ages, all day. The music will be really fun dance music.
SCW: Do you have any shout outs that you would like to give?
Phillip: Shout out to Cory and Leslie, some friends for Las Vegas. Thanks to Zappos that hires us a lot. Of course Opulent Temple, those guys are out good friends. Without them we would never be where we are today. They sort of took us under their wing and I’ve always looked up to them. Syd Gris has helped us along the way. Thank you for letting us be a part of what you do. We love bringing people together to see amazing shows. Sid leads with his heart and passion and everything else falls into place.
SCW: Awesome, well thank you for taking the time to answer out questions.
Phillip: Thank you too.
