Retired Wetsuits

WetsuitI drove into my garage after getting my morning coffee, where the cups, holders, and lids are all recyclable; something that always impresses me when I go to the Pacific Coffee Roasting Company.  Anyway, as I arrived home, I noticed a small pile of old wetsuits sitting on the garage floor.  They are relatively new but have been lovingly used to the point that they have small tears, holes and leakage.  For the first time, I wondered: what do people do with their old wetsuits when they aren’t usable any longer?  I would guess that neoprene isn’t the most biodegradable material on the planet.

So here I am, sitting in front of my computer researching neoprene.  I found a couple of cool websites that offer several suggestions, including tips on how to make beer cozies and casings for your technology.  I also discovered that O’Neill partnered with ReSurf Recycling; a company in Oceanside CA that recycles old surfboards and wetsuits.  They use the old neoprene to make 100% recycled yoga mats (fun and functional!)

So here is my question for all of you out in the SCW community: what do YOU do with your old wetsuits?  Please reply below, and feel free to share any cool ideas.
