Once again Santa Cruz has proven itself to be a breeding ground for creativity: a hub for artists of many talents working in varied mediums. Born and raised in our coastal town, multimedia artist Damiaen Hollinga emerges with a catalog of artistic accomplishments and a vision for our local artists.
Parachute Collective: Co-founder and Advocate of the Arts
In 2011, Hollinga recognized the need for a supportive community of artists that would facilitate and showcase each other’s artwork. He and several other local artists partnered to create Parachute Collective. Following in the footsteps of Upper Playground in San Carlos, Parachute Collective’s goals were simple: to promote and uplift unknown artists in Santa Cruz. “In the beginning,” Hollinga says, “the idea was to feature different artists’ designs on our apparel, but it has really grown into so much more.” Today Parachute Collective consists of 150 members including painters, directors, producers, graphic artists, musicians, photographers, fashion designers and entertainers. Parachute represents its collective members by providing promotional assistance, collaborative opportunities and venues to showcase featured artists.
Hollinga’s Pen and Ink
Well-known for his graphic style, Hollinga creates compositions that resemble today’s comic books, tattoos and street art. He describes his work as “…surreal. A mixing of machine, nature and fantasy… life.” His work has been featured in local galleries, coffee shops and art shows, such as the First Friday event at Bocci’s Cellar, which is held the first Friday of every month. His visual art can be seen on his Facebook artist page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Damiaen-Hollinga/383351015029389?ref=ts&fref=ts
Hollinga as Music Producer
Hollinga, aka AlabasterKane, has been in the Santa Cruz music scene for over ten years, dividing his time as a bass player, music producer and DJ. As a member of Nexus Nebula, (a fusion of Raindance and Moontribe), Hollinga is a resident producer and DJ for camp events such as Burning Man, and also aids in the design and construction of the stage infrastructures. Performing DJ sets, Hollinga uses a variety of programs in his music including Ableton Live and Logic. Influenced by the music of such artists as Bonobo and Kruder and Dorfmeister, his sound is beat-driven with a diverse mix of trip hop, jazz and electronica. AlabasterKane can be found on Sound Cloud and will be offering free downloads for a limited time as a thank you to the readers of SantaCruzWaves.com. Future plans are in the works to release an album, a one-hour live mix as well as collaborative projects with Lunch Tray and Stridah.
