Arts Council Santa Cruz County’s Open Studios Art Tour has been rocking hard since 1986. For three decades they’ve produced an annual event where art admirers and buyers take a self-guided tour of 300+ artist studios, across Santa Cruz County. One of the most popular events in the county, the Tour draws thousands of locals and visitors from all over to see the creative process at work and experience first-hand the artistic diversity of our community.
Its 30th anniversary Tour will be here before you know it, and they’re holding auditions (takin applications) for people interested in joining their band of visual artists for the Tour. Are you ready to rock? Apply today! And, they’re busting out a crazy new show. It’s been 30 years, so the Arts Council decided to blow up one of the pieces at center stage of the Open Studios experience – the Artist Guide.
Out with the Old School
For years, the Artist Guide was sold in stores for $20, with about 3,000 folks picking up a copy. This year, the Arts Council is changing how it does business and doing everything it can to momumentally expand the fan base for local artists.

They’ve joined forces Good Times for the 2015 Tour, and with their help will distribute 40,000 Guides this year. That’s more than 12x the visibility over last year. In late September, 35,000 full-color, glossy, magazine-style Guides will be inserted into the Good Times and will be distributed in Monterey and
Santa Clara counties – free to anyone who picks up a copy. Cue the towering flames! Hear the roar of the crowd.
A Broader Lineup
The Arts Council is making Open Studios truly Open. That means finding ways to convey that the tour is inclusive and open to people of all ages, incomes, artistic interests, and means of travel. So, they’ll add a few focused performance pieces to highlight the lineup. Things like…
-The Under 30 Crowd: Artists who have art for sale under $30
-The Classic Rockers: Artists who have been in the Tour for all 30 years
-Festival Grounds: Places where many artists are close together, so people can park once and see
-Two-Wheeled Tours: Places within easy biking distance
-Just Added!: Artists participating for the 1st time or coming back after a hiatus – That’s you!
The Outta Town Blues
For fans who miss the September issue of the Good Times, and folks used to the classic system, they’ll
have 5,000 Guides available, for just 5 bucks, in outlets throughout September and October. Plus,
there’s an Open Studios app, which has more cowbells, whistles, and functionality than ever.
Full Lineup Announced Soon
As with any great event, they have to solidify the festival lineup. Apply today!
